Ringtones?

How do you make/get ringtones without using the internet from your phone. When I try to make ringtones, it says the file is not mp3. I try to make the ringtones from my iTunes music, but it doesn't work. Why? Is there an easier way to get/make them for free without using the internet from my phone?

Reply:I have a Motorola Slvr, and use the following softwares to make my ringtones. Audacity, Lame, %26amp; CDex.

Lame is just needed to export the files in Audacity, CDex is only if you want to take the music off CD. Audacity is the software that you use to actually edit the music. Hope this helps!
Reply:It may depend on your phone. I've made them for my Motorola V300 and MOTORIZR and the same mp3 ringtones work on my Nokia 5300. The difference is that the V300 required a Motorola data cable to transfer and was a little pickier on the mp3 specifications. The newer phones mounted via the USB cable with no problem. Good luck.
